Treasure Coast Learning Experiences | Family on hike in Hobe Sound

Meaningful learning does not have to come with a high price tag. As a homeschool family with large age gaps, one of our favorite ways to fill our time is to explore fun areas that spark our interest and help us learn.  The Treasure Coast is an excellent place for this, offering families endless opportunities to learn through nature, community spaces, and simple at-home activities.

Whether you are teaching a preschooler, homeschooling mixed-age groups, or just looking for something to do on the weekends, this guide highlights affordable indoor, outdoor, and at-home learning experiences arranged from north to south along the Treasure Coast.

Indian River County

Hallstrom House & Farmstead is a quick, free spot to explore Florida’s history.

Indian River County libraries offer free storytimes, LEGO/STEAM-style clubs, crafts, and learning programs.

Outdoor Learning Experiences

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge provides a powerful learning environment focused on conservation, bird habitats, and protected ecosystems. It is ideal for nature observation and discussion-based learning.

The Environmental Learning Center offers hands-on outdoor exhibits centered around lagoon ecology. It works well for homeschool science studies and interactive learning days.

The Oxbow Eco Center offers indoor exhibits and educational displays focused on local wildlife and environmental science.

The St. Lucie County Aquarium introduces children to marine life, habitats, and conservation through engaging exhibits that support both casual learning and homeschool studies.

Martin County

Indoor Learning Experiences

The Martin County Library System offers several free educational programs, reading activities, and community events that support early learning and homeschooling. Check out some of their classes offered in both evenings and weekends!

The Hobe Sound Nature Center is my daughter’s favorite. This is a place you can pop in quickly as you pass on the way to the water, or stay longer and enjoy watching them feed the animals lunch. With both weekday and weekend classes and story times, this is an excellent option for families of all ages. If you have a teenager, they also offer volunteer positions for teens looking to give back to their community.

When we explored, our daughter wasn’t quite tall enough to climb.

Simple Learning Themes That Work At Home Across the Treasure Coast

Search for shapes in nature, such as circles in shells or lines in leaves.

Combine a library visit with outdoor play to create a complete learning morning.

Homeschool Friendly Ideas

Encourage children to keep a field notebook with observations, questions, and sketches.

Plan a low-budget learning day and focus on what was learned rather than what was spent.

Compare Florida ecosystems such as beaches, wetlands, rivers, and forests using real-world examples.

At Home Learning Ideas

Preschool:

Explore ocean-themed play using toy animals, water bins, and picture books.

Sort shells, rocks, or leaves by size, texture, or color to practice classification skills.

Create a lagoon-themed sensory activity for preschoolers using water, sand, and toy animals.

Explore animal adaptations by pretending to be birds using different tools as beaks.

Homeschoolers:

Research sea turtles, map migration routes, or write about how coastal communities protect marine life.

Build a simple unit study comparing rivers, lagoons, and oceans using maps and observations.

Journal or write about how wildlife refuges protect animals and why conservation matters.

Use a county map to identify towns, parks, and beaches. Older students can calculate distances and plan a low-budget day trip.
