Home Depot Kids Workshop FAQ
What: Home Depot hosts a free, nation-wide workshop for kids.
When: 9am-12pm every first Saturday of the month. Show up at anytime within that timeframe-it takes about 30 minutes to complete!
Where: Almost every Home Depot location in the U.S. participates in the free workshop.
Who: Children of all ages can attend a workshop. In my opinion, 4 years old and up is the perfect age, but I’ve seen 3 year olds working diligently. It all depends on the child, and of course, the willful intent of the parent to guide the little builder.
How: Just show up, but it’s better to register on their website to ensure there is a kit for your kids. But, I will say that we have been several times without registering and we have always had a kit. So if you’re a last minute parent like me, don’t fret.
Pro Tip: The first time we took our son to a Home Depot workshop, he was quick to lose attention. He was 3 years old. But, we brought him back the following month and he seemed to have more patience. It just got easier each month after that.
What is the Home Depot Kids Workshop Schedule?
Home Depot announces their DIY projects in advance. Here is the 2024 Home Depot kids workshop schedule:
June 1st- We built a Grill. The grill top opened up, and they gave you 2 gift cards to add value to, and put inside the grill. This was the perfect Father’s Day craft-turned into a gift. My son had fun with the tiny hammer, and we helped him get the nails in. The amount of screws and wood pieces can seem very involved, so get ready to follow some steps.
July 6th-Soccer Game
August 3rd-Whiteboard
September 7th-Field Goal Game
October 5th-Fire Rescue Truck
November 2nd-Pumpkin Tic-Tac-Toe
November 30th-Cocoa Ornament (there is always a bonus workshop after Black Friday)
December 7th– Holiday Snow Globe
January 4th-Piggy Bank
What to bring to a Home Depot kids workshop
Nothing! (If it’s your first time.)
If you’ve been before, then you probably were given an apron. No big deal if you forget it, they should have more. However, they do say that this workshop is while supplies last.
So I imagine that on a rare occasion, they could run out on a busy Saturday if you get there later.
They also provide the tools (hammer, screwdriver, etc.) Paint, and of course, the kit, itself.
Building things encourages confidence and helps with fine-motor skills! This class is not only adorable, but very beneficial in promoting valuable life-skills.Â
Pro Tip: You can get your own kits from Home Depot to take home. This is a great idea for birthday parties, or just to keep the kids busy.
Additionally, Home Depot has DIY tutorials for all kinds of projects on their site, and you can easily get all of the items needed for the project at their store.
The in-store workshops are either held at the covered loading dock or inside the store in a designated aisle. Just ask a HD employee where to go.
Home Depot kids workshop kits
The kit comes in a bag with directions and all the pieces and nails. The prized possession is also in the kit! (at least for me.) And that’s the pin! Each time you attend a workshop, you receive a pin for your apron with the date and picture on it of the project that you made.
I think this is so cute and fun. Collecting the pins and seeing our apron fill up gets us excited!
You will even get a cute little certificate of completion in your kit.
Tips for doing DIY projects with little kids
Try to remain calm! That’s my biggest tip. I am not a perfectionist but when I see all kinds of wonky mis-match going on-I have to try hard not to intervene! In reality, it’s so fun watching them get creative.
Prepare to get messy. No matter how hard I try, I always get paint on my hands. No big deal for me, but just a D.I.Y- F.Y.I! 🙂
Have patience. The steps take a little longer to get through when you have toddlers.
If you are doing these DIY projects with school-aged kids, then you are in the clear. Toddler projects always come out haphazard, and that’s part of the joy in creating with them. We keep our projects as memories and this has become such a fun tradition!
Pro Tip: Sometimes certain locations offer snacks!
We did one out under the loading dock on a hot summer day, and they provided snow cones!
I hope this post was everything you wanted to know about Home Depot’s kids workshop!
Enjoy your DIY date with the kids which may be the start to a new tradition!
