How to Throw a Simple Birthday Party on the Farm
I had so much fun creating this birthday party on the farm for a boy but you can easily swap out the blues for pinks if you have a girl. This birthday party on the farm was ideal for staying in budget, since we have three kids with birthdays to celebrate in the same season.
In this post I’ll give you all the details on how to throw an epic farm party while keeping it affordable.
Farm Animals
The first factor you want to consider is what type of farm party you’re going to have. You can integrate this theme in three ways!
- A farmers market theme– no animals needed. This can be a really cute idea for farm-to-table style food and decor, and while you don’t need animals at the “farmers market,” you can incorporate them into your decor since they go hand-in-hand.
- Backyard petting zoo-hire a local mobile petting zoo to setup at home. Check with your local farms to see if they offer this or just do a quick google search, like “mobile petting zoo near me.” If the birthday is during the colder months, you can do toy animals inside and still have this theme.
- Book a farm to host your party-this is the route that we chose because we have a number of really cool farms in our area, and we wanted the kids to be able to spread out and run and play.
Farm Birthday Party Food Ideas
The main dish
Next, think about the food. Are you cooking, catering, or just ordering pizza? We chose the ladder. You may not even want to do a main dish at all and just keep your party simple with pickings. At our farm party, we wanted it to be as simple as possible and personally, if I’m going to spend time on a party, it’s going to be on the details and not on cooking!
So, catering or pizza were the options for us, and since pizza was popular with kids and less stress for me, that was what we did! We took it up a notch from Domino’s but honestly, to save more money- you certainly could do a chain pizza place and nobody will care, trust me.
Appetizers
I so wanted to do a very theme-appropriate grazing board with meats and cheeses, but that can add up quick, so I decided to buy some fresh organic veggies (carrots, bell pepper, cucumber, and broccoli florets) and make a spread with ranch dip. It was a hit.
A fruit platter would be a nice option here, too. I also think pigs in a blanket would be cute.
I put a cute little chalkboard sign next to it that read “organic.” Almost every sign was related to keeping the farmers market experience.
Other things you may find at a farmers market are fresh flowers, eggs, honey, sourdough bread, etc. so keep that in mind when thinking of how to design your spread.
Treats
For the sake of keeping our farmers market budget-friendly, we just did cake pops and the cake. Check out these super cute cake pops that I made (first timer, here,) They turned out great and looked so good on display. I found adorable egg cartons on Amazon, and will re-use them for easter.
We did splurge a little on our cake which we definitely could have down-sized on. This size cake was servings for 40 but it was so cute and my son lit-up when he saw it. Our plates and utensils were perfect with our decor, as well!
Farm Theme Decorations you can DIY
Now, for the best part about throwing a farm party! I adore designing and planning my kids parties. I’m all about the details– so I truly have to stop myself from overspending and going overkill on the decor. The best way to save money on any party, is to reuse items. Here’s three tips to consider for getting the most out of your money and supplies.
- Invest in these arch backdrop stands. This is so worth it because you can break them down into small pieces and store them for your next party. We use them at EVERY party and have gotten their money’s worth! I have a white/beige reversible cover for the stands that can be used in any party theme. This way it’s easy to fit any decor and you can personalize it with a banner.
- Get yourself one big welcome sign! Signs can make a party feel so much more personalized. I either hand-write my signs, use my cricut, or sometimes just print out letters and paste them on. Having a good sign that folds up is a must to save over the years
- Another suggestion is to add folding tables to your party list-that you can store away when not in use. Whip these babies out for every and any party-they come in standard sizes and kids sizes. You can also get stackable chairs or folding chairs depending on your storage options and personal preference. We didn’t need to use ours because the farm had tables and chairs already. .
DIY Farm Party Favors
Since our farm party had a lot of animals, I mean a lot- (chickens, goats, highland cows, alpacas, donkeys, miniature horses, llamas, sheep, and ducks-gah did I forget any?) we didn’t need crafts, games, or activities to entertain the kids.
But, we did decorate the kids table with egg cartons, stickers, and crayons so the kiddos could decorate their egg cartons before the pizza.
Inside the egg cartons were plain, white plastic eggs filled with candy, and they each got one egg-shaped play-doh.
The biggest hit were these farm animal face masks! The kids actually got excited about them and wore them the entire time
We also did seed packets and shovels. The shovels came in a 6-pack and we taped one packet to each shovel. Then, of course we had to label it to fit the farmers market theme. (I know, I’m extra.)
Farmers Market Theme Party
The farmers market theme party can be a theme all by itself. But, we mixed it in with the farm animal birthday theme and it was the cutest idea ever. Having the tables setup with signs felt like a real market experience, and the kids were really “shopping” for goods.
We made fun signs to label all of “groceries” and farm items. The chalkboard paper is easy to find on Amazon but you can also get it as a peel and stick.
We did apple juice and also made a sign for the kids organic chocolate milks that read, “fresh cows milk, utterly delicious.” I literally could not stop with the puns this day.
We had such a good time putting together this simple birthday party on the farm!
I will say that this was the easiest party that I’ve done thus far since we didn’t have to worry about entertainment or food.
Oh yea, I forgot to mention that I did the balloons myself! This was $20 as opposed to the $400 quotes we got for a balloon artist. Although not as nice, it did the job and it came out really cute!
